Exposure

Hello, I hope that everyone enjoyed their holidays and are ready to make 2016 a memorable one!

Todays blog is about Exposure. Proper exposure in a photograph is key to making an image stand out. Over exposure is when the shutter is open too long and will wash out the subject and/or the surrounding areas of a photo. The photo may become too bright. Blue skies will turn out whitish, green trees or grass will become too yellow in an overexposed image. On the flip side, under exposure will be too dark and the shadows will become too harsh. You may not be able to see any detail in the shadowy areas or even the subject as well. 

In automatic mode on a camera there are times when the sensor will over or under expose an image. Often I have people ask me why the photo didn't turn out the way they saw it. As I explained in previous blogs, this is due to the cameras sensor doing its best job to compensate in areas of an image. Its not always accurate. Learning the best practices to utilize your ISO settings, shutter speeds, and apertures in manual mode will help you make the necessary adjustments yourself to improve your photos. 

With this all being said, there are times when you may be trying to be creative that over or under exposing intentionally can create outstanding photos! You may need to understand more on how to do this intentionally in manual mode first, and how to do it consistently, to better improve what you can do photographically.
