Busy Week/Abstract iPhone Photography

Hi all,

Feeling a bit under the weather this weekend but I wanted to keep up with the blog anyhow. After a busy week of photo/video contract work for a few great Westinghouse events, it seems the flu bug may have caught me.

This week I'll just share a quick image I felt was pretty nifty that I shot with the ole iPhone. This somewhat abstracted image I captured on a late afternoon right from my front door. It continuously amazes me of the aesthetic things we pass up on our daily routine. The light dusting of snow made the giant Mulberry tree seem to pop and our frosted front door served as a unique oddly shaped frame. The porch distorted and the tree seems to have multiplied. What I thought was the best part of the image is that the tree in the center still came out pretty detailed. As always, questions/comments/critiques welcome. Have a great week, I'm going to SLEEP! Thanks for visiting.

Still Life

Happy Saturday everyone,

Today I'd like to share just a few still life photos with you that I've worked on.

Crosswords is the first image. I took it on a flight en route to Portland, OR. The unsuspecting subject didn't notice I had snapped a shot of him working diligently on the days crossword puzzle. The side sunlight spilling in through the window, along with the wide range of tonal contrasts and the textured hair of his hands made for an interesting photo from my perspective.

As I was eating a scrumptious meal at a local Italian restaurant, I noticed the nostalgic European look of an empty table after the patrons had dined and left. Armed with my iPhone only at the time, I snapped Old World Dinner. The strong differentiation in the contrasts of the window light and the chairs shadows helped lend a nice sense of depth to the photo. The tussled table, leftover dinner check, and textures in the background wall and tablecloth all interested me and reminded me of what an old Italian cafe would look like. The only thing that was missing...wine glasses!

Tree Stump in Lake was taken early one morning as I settled into my secret fishing hole. The fog was so thick and the only thing I could see was this stump protruding from the water. Thankfully, I carry my camera most fishing trips and I shot the image in high resolution. I'm betting this scene would've been much lower quality and WAY more difficult to focus on had I only had my iPhone, especially considering the available low light. I'm particularly proud of the minimalistic approach I took to create this photo. Almost every range of black, white, and mid-tone is present from top to bottom through the image.

As always, comments, critiques, or questions are encouraged. Feel free to email me at bobby@drakulicphotography.com Have a great weekend all!

New Images Added to the Galleries

Hey everybody,

Just added a few newer images to the Abstractions and Landscapes galleries.

The 1st two images are hopefully for a seasonal book that I'm working on. The premise for the book is to photograph nearby Bushy Run Battlefield during the crazy Western Pennsylvania seasonal changes that take here place year round. This is just a few images that I thought may make the final cut for when I decide to finish and print it.

The last photo is an abstraction that I just happened to wander across after the last snowstorm. I loved the way that the shadow played off of the curvy snow drift as it was catching the last of the days sunshine. The whole image, I feel is sort of Edward Weston-esque...although I'd NEVER compare myself to that photography master!

As always feedback is welcome and for more information on the upcoming Bushy Run book I'm hoping to finish up this year sometime, contact me at bobby@drakulicphotography.com I'm trying to gather anyones interest on such a project. Thanks, enjoy the wild weather week!
